Just like the seasons, the beauty routines of women over 60 need to adapt to changes in light and atmosphere, and to changes in our skin over time. With spring around the corner, it’s time to adapt our beauty routines to warmer weather, lighter clothes, longer light, and being outdoors more.  Here are a few of the products we are considering as we transition into spring. Consider double duty products: sunscreen and moisturizer in one

If you haven’t been wearing sunscreen during the winter, now is the time to start.  With the advent of spring, it’s key to include sunscreen in your daily skincare routine.  Make it the first thing you put on your face.  If you are using moisturizer, wait 30 minutes after you apply sunscreen before applying your moisturizer.

Check out the new water-based creams

Barrier creams, also called occlusives, tend to be heavy and oily to prevent evaporation of water from the skin.  If you are in a spring mood and would like to try something lighter (but still very effective), water-based creams are all the rage now.

They work by using water as the prime ingredient to attract other water-attracting humectant ingredients. This helps to achieve hydration from within the skin as opposed to sealing in moisture from the outside as heavy barrier creams do. They are particularly good if you find that occlusive creams cause your skin to break out from time to time.

Try this concealer/translucent powder technique

The light, bright atmosphere of spring brings your skin into focus.  If you are still trying to cover flaws with heavy foundation (which never works) try this technique. It requires only concealer and translucent powder.

You may already have concealer that you use to camouflage dark under-eye circles. This is not the concealer you will use for this as it will be too light for your face.  Buy a good concealer that matches the skin on your face perfectly.

Using your magnifying mirror, dot and pat the concealer only on problem areas, such as redness, veins, and sunspots.  (Concealers typically come with a doe foot applicator which makes it easy for you to target problem areas.) Then dust translucent powder (also called setting or finishing powder) all over your face to reflect light.

Unlike powder foundation, translucent powder has no color; its purpose is to give your skin a smooth, light-reflecting finish. A light-reflecting finish makes your skin look smooth and youthful. The result is a flawless fresh look that is difficult to achieve with foundation alone.

Consider swapping out bottled products for bars

There is a trend now to buy shampoo and conditioner in bar form.  It reduces our consumption of plastics as well as the number of unpronounceable ingredients that manufacturers can put in liquids but not solids.  Bars are also much safer for travel–no leaks or TSA restrictions.  Bars contain concentrated ingredients so their unit cost for actual cleansing ingredients is lower, in contrast to bottled products that are mainly water.
