Turn up the glow: Everyday to Holiday makeup for mature skin

Beautiful mature woman in red lipstick with cocktail

There are subtle ways to rev up your everyday makeup for the holidays to make you look polished and glamorous without looking overdone.

Most of the tips below you probably don’t do every day. But with very little effort and no special skill, you can wow friends and family with your holiday look. Let’s get started.

Highlight your cheekbones

You probably just brush the apples of your cheeks with blush for every day. But a highlighter stroked along the top of your cheekbones adds instant glamour.

Notice the gorgeous reflection of light along her cheekbone. Feel the bone with your fingers and add the highlighter along that bone.

Highlight the inner corner of your eye

highlighting inner eye

You probably wouldn’t highlight your inner eye for daytime, but in evening light it is a beautiful way to make your eyes pop. Notice how the highlighter does not extend to the middle of the eyelid, either top or bottom. This effect is best done with a highlighting pencil, not a highlighting powder.

Use a light-reflective eyeshadow

Again, light-reflective eyeshadow is not something that you would do in the daytime. This step takes your eyes to another level and is just the glam ticket for evenings, when your eyelids reflect the glow of a fireplace or holiday lights.

Metallic eyeshadow

Revel in the red lip

There is no better time of year to wear red on your lips than the winter holiday season. Just remember the guidelines for our age group.

Choose a red that goes with your skin tone. Some reds have a blue undertone, and some have a warm, orangey undertone. If you don’t know your skin tone, a sales assistant at your favorite makeup counter can help you choose one to suit you.

Revlon’s Fire & Ice

For a warm tone, Revlon’s Fire & Ice shade is legendary. The red lipstick debuted in 1952 and continues to be a best-seller well over 50 years later. Why? Because the vitamin E-infused formula is ultra-creamy. And although it’s a red, the shade has a slight orangey tint for skin tones that look better with warm accents.

NARS Audacious Lipstick in Rita

For cool complexions there’s NARS Audacious Lipstick in the shade, Rita. According to the NARS website, this lipstick is” shamelessly seductive in touch and texture and glides on like satin in a single stroke”. Rita is a gorgeous, cool-toned scarlet red.
